Pierre Players to Hold Performance Lighting and Flat Building Workshops

Tuesday, November 2, 2021

Pierre Players is excited to bring Black Hills Community Theatre Technical Director Rodger Hartley to the Grand Opera House for a workshop on performance lighting on Nov. 20-21.

A Pierre native and former Pierre Players volunteer, Hartley has extensive knowledge of the lighting set up and light board at the Grand Opera House. He will demonstrate how to set up a repertoire lighting configuration for Pierre Players’ stage and teach volunteers how to customize the lights and control board.

On Saturday, Nov. 20, the workshop will focus on lighting theory and how to move and adjust the lights. The training will involve climbing ladders. On Sunday, Nov. 21, the focus will be on how to program the control board to make the performance light cues flow seamlessly. Workshop times on both days are 1-7 p.m. CST at the Grand Opera House at 109 S. Pierre St. in Pierre.

Theater lighting is used to draw focus to the character or element it is highlighting. It can be used to separate a character from the backdrop and surrounding characters, often for an important piece of dialog or to emphasize the action, emotion or expression of the character.

On Saturday, Dec. 11, Pierre Players will hold a flat building workshop at 10 a.m. CST at the Grand Opera House. The workshop will be led by Scott Hipple, who has built numerous Pierre Players’ sets. Volunteers will replace the canvas on 10-foot flats used for set construction. Volunteers are also needed to help with other maintenance at the Grand Opera House, such as organizing the paint room, re-numbering audience seats and rows, and painting the Encore Room/Box Office.

Pierre Players Reschedules ‘A Little Piece of Heaven,' Box Office for ‘Radium Girls’ to Open on April 19

Wednesday, March 31, 2021

Pierre Players Community Theatre is pleased to announce that it has rescheduled “A Little Piece of Heaven” for Oct. 22-24 and Oct. 28-30. Originally planned for late February/early March, the production was canceled due to concerns at the time with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and not enough people at auditions to cast the production.

“A Little Piece of Heaven” will be part of Pierre Players’ current 2020-2021 season, meaning that season members will be able to see the production as part of their current membership. Pierre Players next season will begin in January 2022, and the show lineup will be announced later this year.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused or contributed to a host of challenges in producing the types of Pierre Players' shows and seasons to which our patrons have become accustomed. To help us plan for future activities, we invite patrons to complete a brief Pierre Players Community Theater 2021 Membership Survey at pierreplayers.com.

Show dates for Pierre Players’ current production “Radium Girls,” are April 30-May 2 and May 6-8. A reminder that audience members will be required to wear masks. Those who are not comfortable attending a live production at the theater or unable to attend in person can view the production virtually on May 6-8. Tickets for “Radium Girls’ will go on sale on April 19.

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, “Radium Girls” offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth and the commercialization of science.

Pierre Players’ next auditions will be for “Man of La Mancha” on May 16-18, followed by auditions for “A Little Piece of Heaven” on Aug. 16 at the Grand Opera House. For more information about Pierre Players’ upcoming productions or auditioning or getting involved, visit pierreplayers.com.

Pierre Players Presents Virtual Production and Pizza Night; Auditions for Next Production to be Held March 1

Thursday, February 18, 2021
Pierre Players Community Theatre will present the production "The First Step” virtually on March 5-11, 2021. Enjoy some pizza before you watch the play on Monday, March 8, when Pierre Players hosts a Pizza Ranch fundraiser. Pierre Players will receive 15% of all dine-in, delivery and takeout orders from Pizza Ranch from 5-8 p.m. CST that evening.

“The First Step,” written by Kathleen Maule Holen, was inspired by a true story of New Year’s resolutions, friendship and purpose in Hot Springs, S.D. For the past 14 years, Dotty Paulson and her three friends have been driving to the top of Veterans Hill at dawn on New Year’s Day. They salute the dawn of the new year, cook breakfast on a grill and affirm their resolutions. They affirm the same ones every year—lose weight, quit smoking, cut back on drinking, get more exercise—and promptly break all of them.

But 2014 is going to be different if Dotty has anything to say about it. She has met the new personal trainer in town and signed herself and her friends up for fitness training. Now all she must do is convince the girls to forget their worn-out resolutions and make just one: by next year they will be strong enough to climb the steps to the top of Veterans Hill.

The production will be available to view online for a free will donation. To sign up for the video link, visit www.pierreplayers.com/gettickets/onlineticketpurchase. The production will be available to view starting Friday, March 5, at 5 p.m. CST through Thursday, March 11, at midnight CST. Questions, email info@pierreplayers.com.

Auditions for Pierre Players’ next production, “Radium Girls,” will be held on Monday, March 1, 2021, at 7 p.m. CST at the Grand Opera House. There are roles for four to five males and five females. For more information about auditioning or getting involved behind the scenes, contact director Joshua Penrod at 605.220.0308 or joshua.dutt@state.sd.us.
